Program derivation: development of programs from specifications

The author advocates the view that programming is essentially a branch of mathematics and that the teaching of programming should from the very beginning deal with the derivation of programs from their specifications in a way that guarantees their correctness, that is, their consistency with specifications.
Dromey has developed a strategy under which one first writes a program that works for a very limited subset of the input domain, then refines it in stages to work for ever larger input sets.
